Future of dedicated brain PET devices

During the 10th European Conference on Clinical Neuroimaging which took place from March 14 – 15, 2022 in Geneva, numerous experts discussed the future of dedicated brain PET devices. One of the keynote presentations was given by Prof. Henryk Barthel from the University Hospital Leipzig with the title: “Is there a future for the new brain dedicated PET systems?“. He explained that the need for dedicated brain PET devices will dramatically increase as soon as disease-modifying therapies or disease-preventing drugs for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) become available. He outlined two  “business case” scenarios considering AD and Parkinson’s Disease and concluded that several thousand dedicated brain PET scanners – which are smaller and less expensive compared to conventional full-body PET scanners – will be needed to adequately scan patients in Europe. He finished his keynote lecture by answering the initial question with “Yes, it is going to be very exciting“.
